Farm House
Farm House
Olympia, Washington
Built on a 33-acre organic farm outside of Olympia, this one-story residence is designed to meet Passive House standards and achieve net-zero energy performance. The home prioritizes comfort, durability, and a deep connection to the surrounding agricultural landscape.
A high-performance building envelope combined with a continuous HRV (heat recovery ventilation) system maintains a stable, comfortable interior environment year-round, minimizing energy use while ensuring excellent indoor air quality. The house is organized on a single level with a conditioned crawlspace / basement, supporting long-term efficiency and resilience.
Architecturally, the project blends Japanese modern farmhouse sensibilities with contemporary sustainable design. Traditional elements such as a Genkan entry and a Japanese-style bathroom (Ofuro) are reinterpreted in a modern context. The exterior is clad in Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) siding, providing natural weather resistance, longevity, and a quiet, timeless presence within the working farm landscape.
